![]() ![]() Perhaps this is the most important thing, don’t you think so? Feel free to speak up in the comments and in our chat. And unlike some other computers, the M1 MacBook Air did the trick, albeit with difficulty. The “translator” Rosetta 2 took part in the synchronization – which, of course, could not but affect the result. With Dropbox storage sync, such a mess happened not only on the M1 MacBook Air… That’s not the worst thing. Well, hundreds of thousands of small files have not gone anywhere either.Īfter some thought, Ernie found some more facts in defense of the weakest of all M1 Macs, which not only lacks a fan, but also has only seven living cores in the GPU. Apparently, they still worked, but not in the way intended. What these tricks were and what he wanted to achieve, Ernie does not say. The end user is not obliged to monitor the internal aspects of the life of the software running on him.īut node_modules were just one of the criminals, not even the main one: in the past years, Ernie has “played” with Dropbox more than once or twice, trying one or the other – and, failing to achieve the desired result, did not delete anything. Ernie blames himself for the fact that everything is so neglected – laziness and bad habits – but it would be more correct to blame Dropbox. Working with small files isn’t one of Dropbox’s strengths – but which one of us has no flaws? Moreover, these directories and their contents, even if the CMS were still in use, need not be synchronized. The directory node_modules, the main application of this system, with a huge number of very small files, and others. In more than ten years at Dropbox, Ernie has accumulated over 200 thousand files… Including traces of the life activity of the content management system on Node.js, which no longer exists. Then, of course, the MacBook Air turned into a miracle computer and “flew” again – but this is already “after a fist fight”, isn’t it? Why does my MacBook freeze? Synchronization continued in the morning, it took several more hours. It turned out that the culprit was not alone. Well, couldn’t everything be as perfect as they write?īy removing the main suspect from the game (I will name him in the next part), and restarting the process, Ernie was able to significantly speed up it and reduce the load on Apple’s most everyday laptop – this time the battery was discharged to 30% in four and a half hours. Actually, if you do not go into details, this is the whole recipe. ![]() Installed Dropbox app (there is no version for Apple Silicon yet, but it will be released soon) and launched it, after which the synchronization with the “cloud” began. On the UK site Amazon, he bought a MacBook Air with 8 GB of RAM and a 512GB SSD – by the way, as I write this, they are also “temporarily out of stock”. Fighting with himself took some time, when he defeated mistrust and doubts, all configurations of M1 Macs except the minimal ones had already been snapped up, and before the new year they will not be delivered. But what his fellow journalists wrote (and continue to write) about the M1 and Mac’and with the M1 inside, did not leave him indifferent. Not because of an allergy to everything apple – just fine with the Hackintosh and Linux installed on the HP Specter Folio, like this laptop itself – and, frankly, Macs have not inspired for a long time. In recent years, Ernie Smith has seen little point in buying a new Mac. And presenting your product with no native support and no big and official statement is not the way a large dompamy hould comunicate with their audience.Everything turned out to be even too simple One of these years is close being over (after presenting it in june 2020), any compamies including google, microsoft and many more already made the change but nothing can be heard of dropbox other than the fact that they „Dont know yet“.ĭear Dropbox team, please wake up and realize that M1 support is needed for a lot of people, therefore customers but also future customers. Apple said on WWDC 2020 that the transition to apple silicon should take up to two years. What is isnt or shouldnt be is a method to straight up ignore the technology change. It should help with the transition to apple silicon macs. Rosetta 2, as Rosetta (1) was aswell, is just meant to be a temporary solution. Why doesnt dropbox just add m1 support then? Shouldnt it be easy to do with an update of xcode?Īll the „problems of rosetta 2“ put aside, users that actually need a service like dropbox need a long term perspective and solution. I dont know about the audience that Dropbox is targeting but just because of the fact that more product pictures are presented with the „macos style of things“ i‘d say that mac users are more important to dropbox than windows users.
