![]() This compact SUV works for families for all the right reasons, notably comfort and safety. This combination of practicality with a dose of zip is an apt description for many aspects of the CX-5. Though the metallic grey with its blue undertones was distinctive, it conveyed a more subtle, practical impression. An element of surprise played into my visceral reaction since it contrasted with the vehicle’s more muted exterior. “Oooh, very nice,” I said under my breath, enjoying the feeling of the smooth leather and admiring the shade of red, which was sporty, confident and fun. We stopped at the ‘Oak Island Triangle’, where countless electronic failures and unexplained phenomena have occurred Smiths Cove, where the 14th century Knights of the Templar iron cross was unearthed and the Money Pit.įirst impressions are everything, and this compact gave me a spark of joy when I opened the door and saw the red leather seats. Tony is a professional diver who has been on the show since season one, carrying out underwater missions like searching flooded mine shafts.Ī natural storyteller, he regaled us with tales of pirates, sharks, mysteries and, of course, Oak Island, while we motored around the island in his comfy Tritoon boat. We had the chance to get closer to the island the following day on Tony Sampson’s Salty Dog Tour. Did they find the shipwreck that they believed existed in the man-made swamp? Equipment trucks crossed the causeway, which was built by treasure hunters in the mid-sixties, and we wondered what they were doing. We had a clear view of the wooded island and we stared at the place that had kept us glued to our TV all spring. We were staying at the Oak Island Resort & Conference Centre, and though it wasn’t on the famous island that bears its name, the property was directly across from it. “You have reached your destination,” our GPS chimed. ![]() ![]() Each time I saw the aerial view of the forested island and the Atlantic shoreline, I commented how wonderful it would be to visit. Not only were the storylines riveting but so was the place itself. The brothers’ finds were fascinating, challenging the historic timeline of European contact in North America. It’s the highest rated show on the channel with 4.1 million viewers, and I’m one of them, having binged-watched all eight seasons in four months during our spring Covid lockdown. The latest treasure hunters to stake their claim are Rick and Marty Lagina, two brothers from Michigan whose escapades are being filmed by the History Channel in the reality series, The Curse of Oak Island. The Holy Grail? Pirate loot? Shakespeare’s manuscripts? Could any of these treasures be buried on Oak Island, a 140-acre isle located in Mahone Bay on the south shore of Nova Scotia? Many believe just that and since the late 18th century, treasure hunters have poured massive amounts of money, time and resources in the quest to discover what secrets and riches it guards

While she became known as a crucial swing vote on the Supreme Court, in her early years O’Connor sided mainly with the conservative justices, led by her law school friend Rehnquist. Known as a hard worker during her tenure on the Court, O’Connor reviewed each of her clerk applicants’ case work herself, and while other Justices chose clerks at least partially along party lines, she was known to choose the smartest, regardless of ideology. O’Connor has mentioned that she felt a great sense of responsibility to be an excellent justice so that there would be no question that women were fully capable, and she was relieved when Ruth Bader Ginsberg joined her on the Court in 1993. She was confirmed unanimously and joined the Court in September of that year. She rebuffed calls from state Republican leaders to run for governor, but willingly accepted the call from President Ronald Reagan in 1981 to be his nominee to the Supreme Court. O’Connor resigned her Senate seat in 1976 for a judgeship in Maricopa County Superior Court, where she continued to build her reputation as a tough judge with respect for lawyers who were well-prepared and little patience for those who were not. She was also known as a hardworking lawmaker with exacting standards, often rewriting her colleagues’ legislation if she felt it necessary. O’Connor earned a reputation as a savvy negotiator who was fiscally conservative but more moderate on social issues like abortion, in keeping with the majority of the Republican party in Arizona at the time. In 1969, she was appointed to the state senate she won re-election in 19, then made history in 1973 when she was elected State majority leader becoming the first woman in the country, from either political party, to reach this position. She returned to paid legal work in 1965, serving as Assistant Attorney General for the state of Arizona. While her sons were young, O’Connor took a five-year hiatus from practicing law and became active in political volunteering with the Republican Party, including with conservative Senator Barry Goldwater’s presidential campaign in 1964. The couple then returned to Maricopa County, Arizona, where they settled to raise their family. After her husband graduated and was drafted, O’Connor moved with him to Germany, where she worked as a civilian attorney for three years. In a 2013 interview, O’Connor remembered, “I called at least 40 of those firms asking for an interview, and not one of them would give me an interview…they said, ‘We don’t hire women,’ and that was a shock to me.”Įventually she got a job at San Mateo County as a deputy attorney by agreeing to work for free. In her last year of law school, O’Connor began dating fellow student John O’Connor, and in December 1952, six months after graduating, the two were married at her family’s Arizona ranch.Īlthough O’Connor was in the top 10% of her graduating law school class, she was told point blank that law firms did not hire women. There, she was an editor of the Stanford Law Review, working with fellow future Supreme Court Justice William Rehnquist. At age 16, she enrolled in Stanford University, graduating Magna Cum Laude with a degree in economics and remaining to enroll in Stanford Law School. O’Connor learned to be independent from her childhood spent among adults and away from her parents, excelling at school in El Paso and skipping two grades. Returning to the ranch during summers, she learned from her father at a young age to drive, mend fences, shoot a rifle and ride with the cowboys. O’Connor was sent to live with her grandmother at age 6 to attend school in El Paso as there were no good schools nearby. The ranch had no running water or electricity until O’Connor was seven years old and finances were tight, but Harry and Ada Mae subscribed to the Wall Street Journal, New Yorker, and other periodicals which mother and daughter read together. In her early childhood, she lived with her parents on a remote cattle ranch, Lazy B, near Duncan, Arizona (25 miles away from town down a dirt road) her sister and brother were not born until O’Connor was eight and ten years old. Sandra Day was born on March 26, 1930, in El Paso, Texas to her rancher father, Harry, and mother, Ada Mae. She dealt with indignities ranging from having to accept a job for no pay after she graduated from law school to the lack of a women’s restroom at the Supreme Court when she was first confirmed – in doing so, paving the way for the women who followed. Sandra Day O’Connor, the first female Supreme Court Justice of the United States, was one of the most influential Americans of the 1980s and 1990s. ![]() NWHM biographies are generously supported by Susan D. In 1969, Zevon recorded his debut album, Wanted: Dead or Alive, which generated almost no interest. We generate a uniformly-distributed random variable from each of these intervals and obtain. In general, the interval is split into equal segments. This is carried out by using the Analytical Inversion Method. In this particular case, we would obtain one number from each interval: and. Moreover the number of segment, that is, the sample size, could be any positive integer. In general this idea works even when the domain is unbounded (for example, in the case of the normal distribution where the values can take could be anything from to ). It shows an example of a probability density function whose domain is and the area is split into 4 segments. We take a random value from each portion. Since the total area under the probability density function is 1, each portion would have an area of. The idea is to split the total area under the probability density function into portions that have equal area. We would like to sample values from this distribution using LHS. Latin Hypercube SamplingĬonsider a random variable with probability density function and cumulative distribution function. For more information, one can have a look here at the article that compares the Analytical Inversion Method to an alternative method known as the Accept-Reject Method. The idea of generating a uniformly-distributed random value and converting it using in order to follow the desired distribution is called the Analytical Inversion Method. This process is repeated until we have gathered values for our sample. Note that by using mathematical theory, it can be shown that has its probability density function equal to. The value where is the inverse of the cumulative distribution function, is our first sample point, which we call. We generate a random number between 0 and 1 and call it (that is is uniformly-distributed on the interval ). We would like to generate a random sample of values from this distribution. Suppose that we have a random variable with a probability density function and cumulative distribution function. The two sampling methods are then extended to and demonstrated on bivariate cases, for which the rate of convergence is also analysed. The methods are compared with each other in terms of convergence. Both methods are explained and the R code for generating samples is provided for each method. We will see something similar when simulating using MCS and LHS. The advantage of stratified sampling over simple random sampling is that even though it is not purely random, it requires a smaller sample size to attain the same precision of the simple random sampling. In random sampling the 20 people are chosen randomly (without the use of any structured method) and in stratified sampling, 4 people are chosen randomly from each of the 5 districts. Suppose we want to pick 20 people from a city which has 5 districts. In order to give a rough idea, MC simulation can be compared to simple random sampling whereas Latin Hypercube Sampling can be compared to stratified sampling. In MCS we obtain a sample in a purely random fashion whereas in LHS we obtain a pseudo-random sample, that is a sample that mimics a random structure. Monte Carlo Sampling (MCS) and Latin Hypercube Sampling (LHS) are two methods of sampling from a given probability distribution. The bridge saddles and tuners are stamped Tokai. The pickups are all Stamped E and measure 6.12 K, nice low output for that vintage single coil sound. The fretboard looks great, the pickups sound amazing, what more can I say. I still have a rare vintage catalogue from those days, and the following pictures are all from this source.Up for sale is very nice Tokai ST-60 Springy sound 1964 RI in Lake Placid Blue. The series after the Springy Sound is also great but less sought-after than the ones from before. The number was also the price in Japanese Yen (the ST50 cost 50,000 Yen, the ST80 was 80,000 Yen)īy the way, soon after the release of these Tokai Strats, Fender won a lawsuit so Tokai had to change the design of the spaghetti logo decal. And – depending on the quality of the wood and the kind of laquer – there were models called ST50 to ST100. Those Springy Sound Strats were available in different variations: first there were copies of the maple neck Strats from the 50ies, and of a 1964 Strat, both in many different colours. (If you want an advice what to do with your money: buy …) I have often noticed a certain trend for Japanese vintage Strats over the last few years, I guess this is because noone can afford vintage Fenders anymore, but those Japanese guitars from the 70ies or very early 80ies were not only – at least in the case of brands like Greco, Tokai, Fernandes, the Squier JV series – of excellent quality and sound great, in addition they are about 30 years old which means the wood dried and became extremely resonant, and they often have that authentic relic look. I sold that guitar about six years later when I got a great old Fender Strat – something I regret today of course because meanwhile these guitars have a legendary reputation, and conesequently they are highly sought after, and prices went up (about 900 – 1,500 €). Fortunately this was about two weeks before Christmas, and I somehow got it managed that I got this guitar from all the money coming from different aunts, uncles and grandma’s. I was fourteen, and that was a lot of money (especially after I got my first guitar only one and a half year before, a 2nd-hand Fender Strat from 1976), much more than I had. ![]() I had to have this guitar, which was priced at 825,- German Marks (the equivalent of 420,- € /US $ 540). ![]() No question that I had to play that guitar: it also sounded much more like a vintage Strat than the contemporary Strats. But this Tokai had the classic small head, a white pickguard with white knobs, staggered vintage style pick-ups, a separate tremolo block, the correct kind of pickguard screws, a light alder body, and even a decal that looked like the old Fender spaghetti logo see pictues below) – in short, it was exactly like those legendardy old Fender Strats at a time when Fender was still building those infamous 70ies style Strats that were so heavy that they got the nickname boat anchor. The regular Strats still had that ugly large peghead that CBS had introduced in 1966, and at that time they all had black plastic parts. But besides the cool colour, there was something else that was unique: it was a replica of a 1964 Fender vintage Stratocaster, it really looked like a pre-CBS Fender. And on this shelf there was this elegant looking fiesta red Tokai Stratocaster. One day I visited the local guitar shop – something I did regularly, just to see and to play as many guitars as possible. Fender had dropped fiesta red eleven years before, in 1969, and in fact I had never seen a fiesta red Strat at all until then. Red guitars were rare in the guitar shops – or rather non-existent. Mark Knopfler was still associated with his red Fender Strats (although in fact he had just started to play Schecter that year). I noticed that a lot of people surf into this site because of these articles, so I want to release a fourth one, this time about the almost legendary Tokai Springy Sound Strats. I already wrote three articles about Japanese vintage Strats, an introduction and a portrait of the fiesta red and the pink metallic Squier JV. ![]() Three hooks offer plenty of options for organizing your keys and other accessories near the door.
